"Transatlanticism", is made out of alcohol ink and yupo paper. This artwork is made from small Yupo paper discs that all connect together to make this stunning heart. The small circles are meant to represent all the little moments that create the bigger picture. This “heart” is guided by the album/song “Transatlanticism” by Death Cab for Cutie. 2020 was a year of great reflection for many of us. Especially during the long year that was the month of March. It personally gave me time to reflect on myself and my life’s journey. As the world shutdown, and human contact became a luxury of the past, I kept saying the lyrics “I need you so much closer” over and over again inside my head. It reminded me of a moment in time, sitting with an old friend who couldn’t bare the first few notes of the song. As soon as they would hear it, they’d tense up. Their soft demeanor harden, demanding me to change the song, as quickly as possible. “I need you so much closer” The kindness would fade and you could feel the pain of what someone had done to them. The vulnerability, the anger, all boiled to the surface. I tried to keep it on a second longer, thinking I was aiding in their healing, but the barnacles were growing quickly on their heart. Those suckers are hard to remove once they’re implanted. I learned the hard way, not all hearts can be mended. Some grow barnacles and become hardened. You cannot fix everyone, but then again, may it wasn't your place to fix that heart in the first place. Material: Alcohol Ink on Yupo (sculpture) mounted on canvas, framed and ready to hang.
