Known locally as The Coffee Pot for its distinctive shape, the Orient Point Lighthouse has guided mariners at the eastern end of Long Island for more than a century. Standing alone at the meeting point of Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound, the lighthouse has become an enduring symbol of the region's maritime history and coastal character.
Created with watercolor and ink on Fabriano cold press paper, this painting captures the lighthouse's striking silhouette against an expansive sky and sea. Loose linework and transparent washes emphasize both the architectural details of the structure and the atmosphere that surrounds it, allowing the landmark to emerge as both a navigational beacon and a place of quiet reflection.
I was drawn to the simplicity of the scene—the contrast between the sturdy lighthouse, the rocky foundation beneath it, and the endless water beyond. The painting celebrates not only an iconic Long Island landmark but also the sense of calm and permanence that lighthouses have long represented.
